HWCT helps in public food distribution – Shreeja Nanda

The world has witnessed a huge economic shock due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In India, the lockdown started across the country on March 24 and is still ongoing. Many commentators have highlighted the plight of the poorest sections of society, particularly migrants who are trudging miles to be back home, having lost their daily wages and now depend on either the government support or private charity for food and shelter.

“My husband and I are low wage workers. He works in a factory that manufactures PPE kits for doctors and the common population. I worked as a maid in a building in Goregaon, but was laid off as people from outside the society were not allowed to enter the buildings,” says Mrs. Pratiksha, a wage-worker from Goregaon. “In the initial months, my husband was the sole bread earner of the family. However, even with his earnings, it was difficult to run the house and feed the children, which is why we had to heavily rely on free distributions of food done by various organizations.” This lasted them well for the initial 4 months of the pandemic, but failed later on. So, she decided to approach us at HWCT to ask for help. After hearing her plight, we decided to support her by giving grocery kits for 6 more months, along with a few masks for her and her family.

Along with Mrs. Pratibha, there are many other families who have been affected by the global pandemic. HWCT stands in solidarity with these people and assures to help as many families as possible to overcome this stressful situation.
